The Jeunes Talents 2017: "La roue" -Wei Chin (Opimasole)

“La Roue” came into being as a one-page comics in memory of my grandfather, who had just passed away back then. I employed a streamlined story-telling technique I learned from a teacher at a comic school -- a style that involves several particular moments of time in one same setting in one page -- to present an outlined process of my time spent with my grandfather since I was little. I found out later that such streamlined presentation, with very limited space, could extend the timeline long enough to cover the entire life story. It so happened that the new talents award of Angoulême International Comics Festival required submissions of no more than three pages of comics, so I based my creation on this technique and came up with a fiction about a family across two generations.
By doing so I intended to bring the presentation, technically, to full play while at the same time emphasizing the dramatic twists in the story.

How Wei CHIN got attached to comics can be traced back to the time when he was about three. His ties of affection with drawing were formed right after his grandfather taught him how to draw many dinosaurs. Majoring in animation in university, CHIN was fascinated by Hayao Miyazaki's works back then. However, it was not until he graduated from the university and worked as an animator that he realized working collectively in cooperation with others in an animation team was
not really his thing. But his desire for narrative drawing drove him to pursue studies in comics in France.

CHIN is currently a student at L'Iconograf, a comic school that attaches great importance to individuality and places equal emphasis on drawing skills and story-telling techniques. He has therefore made much progress in the wealth and variety of his creation. He also visits libraries very often, checking out related books (including various European comic books). The process of reading
has widened his horizon, enabling him to understand how deep and far comics can go. He is currently preparing to publish his first comic work.
